From breathtaking sunsets to charming local gems, Cannon Beach offers an abundance of beauty waiting to be captured. Join me as I share my journey and provide tips for making the most of your visit to this coastal paradise.

Chasing Sunsets: Tips for Seeking the Best Views

Cannon Beach is renowned for its spectacular sunsets, and for good reason. The combination of vast sandy shores, towering sea stacks, and dramatic skies creates the perfect backdrop for capturing unforgettable moments. Here are a few tips for finding the best sunset views:

  1. Explore Ecola State Park: For panoramic views of the coastline and rugged cliffs, head to Ecola State Park. Take a leisurely hike along the trails and find the perfect spot to watch the sun dip below the horizon. You’ll likely be visited by local wildlife families — namely deer and elk who explore that area for food at all times of the day.

  2. Visit Haystack Rock: Iconic and majestic, Haystack Rock is a must-visit destination in Cannon Beach. Arrive early to stake out a prime spot on the beach and witness the sun setting behind this natural wonder. You’ll be joined by many spectators who quietly soak in the views with you. Watching strangers enjoy the sunset is one of my favorite side benefits of seeing the magnificent views myself.

  3. Scout Local Lookouts: Cannon Beach offers several lookout points scattered along the coastline. From Chapman Point to Silver Point, these hidden gems provide stunning vistas and unparalleled views of the sunset.

Exploring Local Gems: Coffee and Shopping

Most of the shops in Cannon Beach close early, so before a day of adventuring and capturing stunning photos, take some time to explore the charming shops and cafes that dot Cannon Beach. Here are a few local gems worth visiting:

  1. Insomnia Coffee Company: Start your day off right with a visit to Insomnia Coffee Company. This cozy cafe serves up delicious coffee, pastries, and light bites – the perfect fuel for a day of exploration. The baristas are all friendly and happy to suggest places to head next. The walls are also decorated with local artistry, so if you’re looking for that perfect piece of art to take home and commemorate your visit, this is a great spot to start.

  2. Cannon Beach Book Company: Nestled in the heart of downtown Cannon Beach, Cannon Beach Book Company is a book lover's paradise. Browse their extensive collection of books, pick up a new read, and unwind in their inviting atmosphere. Supporting independent booksellers is important, and this is one of my personal favorites. I can’t ever escape a trip to the coast without purchasing a book or two. And if you’re lucky, the local library is having one of their used book sales just across the street, so be sure to browse their offerings as well.

  3. Bruce's Candy Kitchen: Indulge your sweet tooth at Bruce's Candy Kitchen, a beloved local institution. From handcrafted chocolates to nostalgic candies, this charming shop offers a delightful array of treats for all ages.

Timing Your Visit: Best Seasons to Explore Cannon Beach

While Cannon Beach is a destination that dazzles year-round, choosing the perfect time to visit can enhance your experience and provide optimal conditions for photography. As a seasoned traveler and photographer, I've found that early spring offers a delightful balance of favorable weather and fewer crowds, making it my personal favorite time to explore this coastal gem.

Before the hustle and bustle of the tourist season in Cannon Beach, early spring presents a golden opportunity to savor the tranquility and beauty of this seaside haven. The weather is mild, the beaches are serene, and the coastal landscape bursts to life with vibrant colors and blooming wildflowers. With fewer visitors vying for prime sunset spots and cozy cafe tables, early spring allows for a more intimate and immersive experience – perfect for capturing the essence of Cannon Beach through the lens. So, if you're looking to beat the crowds and bask in the magic of Cannon Beach at its most serene, consider planning your visit during the enchanting days of early spring.
